Toxic Levels of Histidine

Histidine is toxic at doses greater than 5% of the total diet per day.

Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms

Toxicity of histidine can produce the following symptoms:

  • Decreased levels of isoleucine in the brain
  • Decreased levels of leucine in the brain
  • Decreased levels of phenylalanine in the brain
  • Decreased levels of tyrosine in the brain
  • Increased histidine levels in the brain
  • Reduced growth

Toxicity of histidine is greatly reduced if it is also supplemented with the following nutrients at the same time:

  • Copper
  • Folic acid (folate)
  • Methionine
  • Vitamin A

Supplementing histidine together with copper, folic acid (folate), methionine and vitamin A greatly reduces its toxicity.
