In general, lysine supplements produce no major problems for otherwise healthy individuals, but certain people should not take lysine supplements without first consulting their doctor for advice:
- People with liver or kidney disease
- People with any type of medical condition
- People with heart disease
- People that have had a heart attack
Toxic Levels of Lysine
Lysine is essentially non-toxic, but may produce some toxicity symptoms at doses greater than 5000mg per day.

Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms
Excessive intake of lysine may cause the following symptoms:
- Elevated LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels
- Elevated triglyceride levels
- Intestinal problems - diarrhoea and stomach cramping
