Carnitine Deficiency
Article navigation
Carnitine deficiency normally does not occur in normally health people.
In general, carnitine deficiency can occur when a person has a genetic defect that prevents normal transport and synthesis of carnitine. In addition to this, certain people can be predisposed to a carnitine deficiency:
- People on low protein diets
- People who are malnutritioned or starving
People who are on low protein diets may become deficient not just in carnitine but all of the amino acids (and especially the essential amino acids) if their protein intake is not sufficient.
People who are malnutritioned or starving are not not be eating enough foods to sustain health and will not be getting enough of not just carnitine but also all the amino acids (and especially the essential amino acids).
