Tryptophan RDI

The RDI for tryptophan is as follows:

  • Children (2-5 years): 3mg per kg of body weight
  • Adults: 12.5mg per kg of body weight

Tolerable upper limit

There is no tolerable upper limit for tryptophan.

Therapeutic dosage

There is a supplementary dosage range that is a safe therapeutic dose of tryptophan:

  • Adults: 300-4,000mg
There is a recommended daily intake (RDI), but there is no tolerable upper limit for tryptophan

The higher levels of tryptophan should only be taken under strict medical supervision because supplementation at very high levels may cause some side effects in some people.
