General warnings and precautions
Certain groups of people should not take tryptophan supplements and others should exercise caution when taking it:
- People with liver or kidney disease
- People with any type of medical condition
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People taking any type of antidepressants*
People with any of the conditions above should consult their doctor before taking any tryptophan supplements, as it could make their condition much worse.

Toxic Levels of Tryptophan
Tryptophan is toxic at doses greater than 4000mg per day.
Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms
Supplements with high doses of tryptophan can cause the following side effect symptoms:
- Anxiety
- Headaches
- Sleepiness
- Stomach cramps and pains
People experiencing any side effects should discontinue their supplements and then only use lower levels or stop supplementation altogether.
