Manganese has a recommended daily intake which is different for the various age groups and genders.
Find your recommended daily intake of manganese below:
- Infants (0-6 months) - 0.003mg
- Infants (7-12 months) - 0.6mg
- Children (1-3 years) - 1.2mg
- Children (4-8 years) - 1.5mg
- Boys (9-13 years) - 1.9mg
- Girls (9-13 years) - 1.6mg
- Boys (14-18 years) - 2.2mg
- Girls (14-18 years) - 1.6mg
- Men (19 years & older) - 2.3mg
- Women (19 years & older) - 1.8mg
- Pregnant women (all ages) - 2.0mg
- Lactating women (all ages) - 2.6mg
There is an established recommended daily intake (RDI) and tolerable upper limit for manganese
Tolerable Upper Limit
There is also a tolerable upper limit for manganese - this is the maximum that can be safely taken of this mineral before it produces serious and toxic side effects:
- Infants (0- 12 months) - not established*
- Children (1-3 years) - 2mg
- Children (4-8 years) - 3mg
- Children (9-13 years) - 6mg
- Children (14-18 years) - 9mg
- Adults (>19 years) - 11mg
- Pregnant & lactating women (<18 years) - 9mg
- Pregnant & lactating women (19-50 years) - 11mg
* The tolerable upper limit for manganese for infants aged 0-12 months has not yet been determined due to a lack of data about the adverse effects in this age group and a concern about the lack of ability of the body of infants to handle excess amounts. The only source of manganese intake should be from food (breast milk and/or baby formula) to prevent high levels of intake and possible adverse effects.
