Zinc has the following effect on lab tests:

  • Blood copper levels

High zinc supplements can decrease blood copper levels (so supplementation with copper is always need if high levels of zinc are supplemented).

Other Interactions with Zinc

Zinc has interactions with other substances, including:

  • Alcohol
    People who drink excessive amounts of alcohol may become deficient in zinc and not be able to effectively utilise the zinc already in the body, as the alcohol has an eliminatory effect on the zinc.
  • Caffeine
    People who drink a lot of coffee may become deficient in zinc and not be able to effectively utilise the zinc already in the body, as the caffeine in the coffee has an eliminatory effect on the zinc.
  • Phytates
    Phytates are substances which occur naturally in plant foods and have antioxidant properties; phytates increase the effectiveness and blood levels of zinc.
  • Polyphenols
    Polyphenols are substances which occur naturally in plant foods and have antioxidant properties; polyphenols increase the effectiveness and blood levels of zinc.
