General warnings and precautions
Certain people should not take choline supplements (especially if they are higher than the tolerable upper limit):
- People with bipolar disorder or depression
People with bipolar disorder should not use choline supplements as it may worse the depressive stage of the illness. Similarly, people with depression should not take choline supplements as it could worsen their depressive symptoms.
Choline is basically non-toxic to healthy adults, but certain people should seek medical advice on whether choline supplementation is suitable for their individual circumstances before taking choline supplements:
- People with Alzheimer's disease
- People with any type of psychiatric condition
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

Toxic Levels of Choline
Choline is toxic at doses greater than 5000mg (5g) per day.
Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms
Choline is relatively non-toxic even at high levels, but it can cause some toxicity symptoms when taken over 1000mg (1g), although most toxicity symptoms do not occur until levels are above 5000-10000mg (5-10g). Overdosage and toxicity is more likely to occur from taking too many supplements, whereas dietary intake of choline is highly unlikely to cause overdosage.
Toxicity symptoms from taking too much choline supplements (over 1000mg) are:
- Depression
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Excessive salivation
- Fishy body odour
- Nausea
People experiencing any of the above toxicity symptoms should discontinue their choline supplements and seek medical advice.
