Vitamin C deficiency occurs when blood levels are less than 2mcg per 100,000,000 of cells.
Mild vitamin C deficiency will produce the following symptoms:
- Anaemia
- Bruising easily
- Fatigue and tiring easily
- Frequent infections
- Loss of appetite
- Nosebleeds
- Slow healing of wounds
- Swollen or painful joints
- Weakening of blood vessel walls
People with any of these symptoms should seek advice from their medical practitioner to determine if vitamin C supplementation is warranted in their individual situation.

If the vitamin C deficiency continues over more than a few weeks, the condition scurvy develops. General symptoms of scurvy are:
- Bleeding gums
- Bleeding under the skin
- Depression
- Extreme tiredness
- Loss of teeth
- Muscle weakness
- Swollen gums
