Vitamin E Deficiency Symptoms

In general, vitamin E deficiency takes quite a long time to show up and may be difficult to identify and diagnose as deficiency in vitamin E.

Mild deficiency of vitamin E has the following symptoms:

  • Burning in the mouth and throat
  • Cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness

People with any of the above symptoms should discuss their situation with their medical practitioner to determine if vitamin E supplements are required.

More severe vitamin E deficiency has the following symptoms:

  • Nerve damage*
  • Skeletal abnormalities
  • Softening of the bones and teeth

* Severe deficiency can result in nerve damage and especially damage to the nerves in the spinal cord and to the retina of the eye.
