Arginine Interactions

Interactions with Medications and Supplements

Arginine has interactions with the following medications and supplements:

  • Drospirenone
Women taking drospirenone for helping to regulate ovulation and menstruation or to treat severe menopause symptoms, may have elevated potassium levels and risk of developing hyperkalaemia if they take arginine supplements and also take other medications that increase blood potassium levels (ACE inhibitors, aldosterone antagonists, certain diuretics, heparin, NSAIDs). Some women taking drospirenone can develop high potassium levels just from that drug alone and arginine supplements
  • Lysine
Arginine competes with lysine for uptake into the brain, so supplementation with arginine needs to be done together with supplementation of lysine and ornithine too.
  • Ornithine
Arginine competes with ornithine for uptake into the brain, so supplementation with arginine needs to be done together with supplementation of lysine and ornithine too.
