Glutamine supplementation is not recommended in the following:
- People with hyper-ammonemia
- People with ammonia intoxication
- People with nitrogen excess
- People with Reye's syndrome
- People with cirrhosis of the liver
- People with liver or kidney disease
- People with any type of medical condition
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
People with any of the conditions above should not take glutamine supplements as this could cause worsening of their symptoms.
Glutamine supplementation is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions as it could worsen their symptoms
Toxic Levels of Glutamine
Glutamine can produce some toxicity at doses greater than 10000mg (10g) per day, while some toxicity symptoms can appear at 300mg (manic behaviour).
Overdosage and Toxicity Symptoms
In generally healthy adults, no major adverse side effects have been reported from glutamine supplementation, other than the following minor symptoms:
- Headache
- Neurological problems
